What’s in a Name

One of the great things about an RPG, or any game that lets you build your own character, is coming up with a name. The name says about as much about you as it does about that character in the game. Sure, spending time making sure you get the look of the character is fun, but for me, the name is probably the most important thing when it comes to the characters I create in a game where I get to create my character.

It sort of goes back to 2006, when my wife and I were preparing to have a second child. at this point in time, I would just pick random, stupid names for characters. It was not uncommon to have a character named Dumbass or Brainless Idiot Wonder. Yes, it showed the incredible lack of maturity in my gaming presence, but hey, you have to have a stupid escape somewhere, so why not in games. Anyway, in 2006, naming my characters changed in a big way.

As I was saying earlier, my wife and I were in the process of having a second child and the pregnancy was not going very well. As a matter of fact, my wife ended up having an induced miscarriage after finding out that the child was not going to survive past the 16th week of the pregnancy. It was a tough moment in my life. We were on track to have a girl, and we had picked the name Zoey Madison. When the miscarriage happened, it was rather shattering. I was looking forward to having a second child and a sister for my son, Seth.

But with that tragedy, it also gave me a newfound way to pay respects to my daughter that never was, as I started exclusively picking female characters and naming them Zoey, whenever possible. It was a small tribute, but it was the best way I knew how, as I have never exactly been known for being an emotional person.

Why would I end up sharing this years later after the fact. No particular reason, except I have been away from this blog for far too long and I felt it was a story that finally needed to be told. And maybe it will raise some inspiration in others when naming their characters in future games. Besides, Zoey is leaps and bounds better than the names mentioned above, don’t you think?

Until the next time, enjoy my latest creation in Dragon Age Inquisition, appropriately named, Zoey.
